Festival celebrates beer passion for the fourth consecutive year here at Pier Mauá; )
From the 5th to the 9th of September, warehouses 2, 3 and 4 of Píer Mauá, in the port area of Rio de Janeiro, will once again host the Mondial de la Bière, which has had its Rio edition since 2013. The festival is consolidated as one of the main events for tasting and disseminating beer culture in the world, being the first to have two annual editions – this year it took place in the first half of the year in São Paulo – confirming a strong beer market and an audience always looking for new things. Every year, new consumers seek out the festival as a gateway to the rapidly expanding world of crafts. The 17,000 square meter space will be taken over by breweries from different states in Brazil and other countries, who are preparing to present well-known labels and new releases to be tasted first-hand.
In this edition, Mondial de la Bière will offer an unmissable selection of beers and gastronomy. Aiming to provide a complete experience, the festival features a gourmet food area and varied musical attractions. The event will feature exhibitors, divided between breweries, importers, distributors, prestigious food trucks and suppliers of beer accessories. In addition to the presentation of new labels, souvenirs such as t-shirts, caps and festival cup holders will be sold. The glass cup with two markings, 100 ml and 200 ml, returns, strengthening the tasting concept. The use of the consumption card will follow the same model as in 2016 with proof of purchase for both exhibitors and visitors. When purchasing the card, simply top up with the desired amount at fixed or mobile points and start your tour of the festival. Cash, debit and credit cards will be accepted, new this year.
The event will feature several breweries participating in the event for the first time, some of them: Viper, Brewlab, Kremer, Matisse, Primata, Show de Bola, Viquim, Dream Bier, Thirst Howks, Halve Maan, among others. Beers that pass through whiskey barrels and other spirits promise to be the hit of the event.
At the event, exhibitors will be able to participate in the MBeer Contest Brazil, an innovative competition, with evaluation based on the intrinsic qualities of beer. Without pre-defined categories by style, the judges – who will do the tastings blindly, without any information about the product, will identify the style of the beer and evaluate it according to the identified style. A jury made up of international and national professionals will select the best labels in the gold and platinum categories and the awards will be given on the first day of the event. Visitors will also be able to vote for the beers they liked most at the festival in the Public MBeer Contest.
The musical program, which has had a democratic nature since 2016, features folk, jazz, reggae, rock, Irish and even samba bands. Two stages will be set up in the outdoor area, offering views of Guanabara Bay. In addition to the eclectic repertoire of sounds, Lady Luck Tatto – new in the 2017 edition, with more than 300 tattoos in the five-day event – has already been confirmed.
For six years now, Mondial de la Bière has presented itself as a showcase for the launch of craft beer production, which annually shows growth between 30% and 40%. In the first edition of the event, Rio de Janeiro had less than 20 craft beer bars. Today, the number varies between 170 and 200 establishments. “Mondial de la Bière is the platform that unites all ends of the beer market. It is a great meeting between the breweries that produce, the consumers who appreciate it, the businesspeople who invest and the schools and institutions that promote knowledge”, comments Luana Cloper, director of the event.
Currently, Brazil is the third largest beer producer in the world, behind only the United States and China. In 2013, there were few people who talked about hop dosages, who rotated glasses with the aim of looking for aromas and who were looking for the sensations that beer can provide in addition to alcohol”, adds Luana.
Brazil is the first country to have two editions per year of the Mondial de la Bière, which this year debuted in São Paulo, with success among the public and exhibitors, confirming that the beer market in Brazil is increasingly stronger, and that brewers have been increasing their numbers.
