In total, 112 moorings will pass through the city, bringing approximately 425 thousand tourists

Who is looking forward to the long-awaited season of welcoming sea giants from all over the world to the Marvelous City? Well, she's getting closer! The 2019/2020 cruise season at Pier Mauá officially begins on October 20th with the arrival of the World Explorer, the first cruise ship built in Portugal and the largest passenger ship built in national shipyards ever. Its capacity is 125 crew and 176 passengers.

By April 2020 there will be a total of 112 dockings, 37 ships, 27 international and 10 national. Eight of them are coming to Rio de Janeiro for the first time. Among the debutants in Brazilian waters we have: World Explorer, Viking Jupiter, Coral Princess, Volendam, Amera, Hanseatic inspiration, Koningsdam and Scenic Eclipse.

In the last season (2018/2019) Pier Mauá received 100 dockings, with an average of 380 thousand tourists, including passengers and crew. For this season, between October 2019 and April 2020, there was an increase of 12 dockings, the number of ships increased by 10 and the forecast of tourists boarding, disembarking and transit increased from 380 thousand to 425 thousand. The number of international ships also increased from 19 to 27.

According to the International Cruise Association (CLIA – Cruise Lines International Association), in the 2018/2019 season, cruises injected around R$ 2,083 billion into the Brazilian economy. This number, which includes both the direct, indirect and induced expenses of shipping companies, as well as the expenses of cruisers and crew, was 16.2% higher compared to the 2017/2018 period, which means an increase of R$ 291 million.

Tourists are welcomed at the cruise terminal located in warehouses 4 and 5 of Pier Mauá, with boarding taking place at Warehouse 4 and luggage handling at 5. It is worth highlighting the ease of access. Those arriving or leaving the terminal have access to a VLT station in front (Parada dos Navios) and 24-hour parking, which is also located close to the Terminal, between Av. Barão de Tefé and Rua Souza e Silva, with pedestrian access on the Boulevard Olympic.

This year, Pier Mauá celebrates 20 years as the gateway to maritime tourism in the Marvelous City. Throughout its history, the brand has experienced a beautiful history of development in Porto do Rio and was one of the pioneers in the area's revitalization process. This is because, since taking over the Rio de Janeiro Maritime Passenger Station and an area of 40 thousand m² in the surrounding area, the company has been investing in the restoration, improvement and maintenance of its space.

Following the evolution of the cruise industry with the arrival of increasingly larger and more modern ships to the Brazilian coast, Pier Mauá was one of those that stood out at the III CLIA Brazil 2019 Forum, held in August, in Brasília, among the passenger terminals which are getting better and better at welcoming cruisers. The project to expand and modernize the International Cruise Terminal includes improving technological resources for the next year to provide even more comfort, safety, facilities and agility for those arriving in the city by ship. Furthermore, the terminal will have new rental areas that include two new warehouses and another 150 meters of pier for berthing.
