Port region gains Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture

Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (MUHCAB)

The Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (Muhcab) opened this Tuesday (23), right next to us, at Cais do Valongo, in Gamboa. The space is one of the 15 points of memory that make up Little Africa, part of the city that remembers the imprint of slavery and the resistance of black people, at the José Bonifácio Cultural Center.

The museum was created in 2017, by decree, but had never been opened to the public. At the time, Muhcab was designed to be an arm of the center that will still be created to catalog the archaeological collection found in that region.

Bringing together approximately 2,500 items, including paintings, sculptures and photographs, the public can also see works by contemporary visual artists. As it is a territorial museum, the buildings and urban elements are also cataloged as a collection. In addition to the visit, the public will be able to take part in theater and percussion workshops.

This Saturday, the 27th, a chat will take place at 4pm with carnival artist Leandro Vieira and researcher Helena Teodoro, on the topic “Black plots and identities”, followed by a samba circle with the group Só Damas.

José Bonifácio Cultural Center

Founded in 1877 by Emperor Pedro II as the first public school in Latin America, the José Bonifácio Cultural Center is part of the Historical and Archaeological Circuit of the Celebration of African Heritage. The mansion was restored in 2013.
