Visit to the Bhering factory – an incredible cultural tour for tourists and locals

Did you know that the first chocolate factory in Brazil is in Rio de Janeiro and close to Pier Mauá, in Santo Cristo? And the best part is, it’s open to visitors and it’s free!!!

With a built area of more than 15 thousand square meters in the Port Zone of the Marvelous City, the former Bhering chocolate factory became a creative arts hub after artists and entrepreneurs in the creative economy began renting its spaces. Currently there are around 80 art studios that share the space with centuries-old machinery in a manufacturing plant that occupies an entire block, where there are ceramists, designers, producers, visual artists, booksellers, gastronomists, artisans, photographers, shopkeepers, furniture warehouses and even a small craft beer factory. On the 6th floor, the machines that made the chocolates are still there and it's really cool to see them up close.

Founded in 1880, Bhering, in addition to being a pioneer, was one of the largest chocolate factories in the country, especially for the production and export of coffee, Toffee candy and Boneco candy, Café Globo and Refeição chocolate. The factory became a chocolate supplier for the Brazilian Imperial Family! The building is also attractive for its distinctive architecture, as the entire metal structure that supports the building, as well as the state-of-the-art machines at that time, came by ship from Hamburg, Germany, after the purchase of the assets of a chocolate industry that had closed. the doors. The highlight area is the terrace, which has a view that covers the entire center of Rio and even Niterói; and the beautiful Pombal, an area with very high ceilings and very well lit by the windows that line the entire building, and which has served as a set for numerous recordings, such as the opening of the Sunday program Fantástico, on TV Globo.
