“Amazônia” exhibition at the Museum of Tomorrow features never-before-seen photographs by Sebastião Salgado

For photography lovers, the “Amazônia” exhibition, by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, is unmissable! Until January 29th, at the Museum of Tomorrow, the public will be able to see 194 breathtaking photographs. Conceived by Lélia Wanick Salgado, who signs the curatorship, the exhibition is the result of Sebastião and Lélia's immersion, for seven years, in the region that covers the North of Brazil and extends to eight more South American countries, occupying a third from the continent; and 60% from Amazônia are in Brazil. The exhibition features never-before-seen photographs depicting the daily lives of indigenous peoples.

Translated through the lenses and scenography of Salgado, the largest tropical forest on the planet, it becomes an invitation to information, reflection and action in defense of the ecosystem essential to life on Earth.

The voice of Amerindian communities can be heard in seven videos that present testimonies from indigenous leaders, without intermediaries. These are impactful reports on the importance of the land, rivers, the Amazon forest and the serious problems that even threaten the survival of individuals and ethnic groups.

In the exhibition space, the sound environment embraces the vision of the photographs with the original soundtrack by Frenchman Jean-Michel Jarre, created at the request of the Salgados based on the sounds of the forest.

The exhibition, which has already impacted the public in Paris, London, Rome and São Paulo, also features two spaces with photo projections. One of them shows forest landscapes accompanied by the symphonic poem Erosão – Origem do Rio Amazonas, by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959); the other features a sequence of portraits of Indians, soundtracked by a specially composed piece by Rodolfo Stroeter.
