History

Our history...

… is linked to your story

In 1997 we won the concession to manage the Maritime Passenger Station at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the main gateway for international tourism in the country, and an area of 70,000 square meters in the surrounding area. After taking over the area, we spent many years investing in the restoration, improvement and maintenance of the space so that today we have what you know: Pier Mauá!

Our International Cruise Terminal has been breaking records over the years, such as during Carnival 2016, when we welcomed 11 ships simultaneously. And we're proud of the many awards we've received for running the Rio de Janeiro International Cruise Terminal. Pier Mauá has won the World Travel Award seven times, in the “Best Cruise Port in South America” category, awarded by the prestigious publication Travel Week (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016). In 2022 and 2024 it was voted Best Cruise Terminal in Latin America by the World Cruise Awards (sister event of the World Travel Awards). It was also voted Best Port of Embarkation of the Brazilian Season by the Krooze Awards in 2024 and 2025, and Best Stopover of the Season also at the Krooze Awards 2025.

In addition to managing Rio's Cruise Port, Pier Mauá also operates in the parties and events segment, allocating its spaces to hold the city's hottest events, such as Rio Gastronomia, Veste Rio, Mondial de La Biere, ArtRio and many others. !

The company began operating in the events area in 2007, after the start of restoration work on its warehouses, which transformed Pier Mauá into the most noble and versatile area for congresses, shows and the most varied artistic and cultural events in the country. Each Warehouse has an average of 3,500 m² that allows the circulation of up to 10 thousand people per day for a large event, and also has a privileged and beautiful view of Guanabara Bay.

A pioneer in the revitalization of Rio de Janeiro's port area, Pier Mauá looks to the future with the aim of integrating the port into the city – in line with City Hall's Porto Maravilha project. Soon we will have more news to explore there. According to the president of Pier Mauá, Luis Cerqueira, “the team is working hard to guarantee the dream of the Porto Cidade project, which aims to bring locals and tourists to enjoy areas closer to the sea. Soon this dream will become reality and will help us keep the historical importance of the port region alive.”

    CRUISE SEASON RELEASED

The resumption of cruises has been authorized. The 2021/2022 season began in December 2021 and was interrupted in January 2022. It was released in March and continued until April.

The trips became possible due to the efforts of the big companies, which organized themselves and implemented a series of procedures to get their routes back on track in complete safety. Passenger screening, including Covid-19 testing in the terminal before boarding, compulsory vaccinations, sanitizing vessels and preventing the spread of disease were some of the measures adopted.

    IMPROVED INFRASTRUCTURE

Improvements to the cruise terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro have been carried out by Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ), the company responsible for port administration, in partnership with Pier Mauá. Among the actions already carried out by the port authority were the ongoing maintenance of the fenders, the assessment and replacement of damaged mooring bollards in the berths and the development of a dredging project, with the aim of guaranteeing an adequate and uniform operational draft throughout the length of the quay for passenger ships.

    IMPROVING SECURITY

A series of significant improvements and investments have been made in port security. Among the main investments made are the CCTV monitoring system with new software; computerized access control using turnstiles and card readers; perimeter alarm using infrared sensors; siren with audio for the emergency control system; modernization of the guardhouses; construction of a new reception; fencing of the water castles, as well as the acquisition of security equipment and software.

28 YEARS AFTER IT ALL BEGAN...

We can say that every effort invested was worth it! We currently have the entire area granted to us (the Touring Building, Espaço Mauá, the 5 Warehouses we manage and the external annex, where we have the Kobra mural) restored and improved inside and out.
