Between the 16th and 18th of November, for the first time in Brazil, more than 150 free activities for the public will take place in the Porto Maravilha region
The Women of the World Festival has already visited more than 20 countries and, this year, will take place in another 53, including Rio de Janeiro. The event, which takes place free of charge between the 16th and 18th of November in various locations in Porto Maravilha, is a space for women to celebrate their stories of struggles and achievements. WOW (an acronym in English for Women of the World and also a play on the linguistic expression that represents enthusiasm and admiration, like wow in Portuguese) began in 2010 at the Southbank Center cultural center in London, created by British producer Jude Kelly, and It is currently replicated in 17 cities on five continents.
The Rio de Janeiro edition will be the first in Latin America and will bring together women from across the city, as well as national and international guests, in dozens of activities. Its realization is being led by Redes da Maré in partnership with the Southbank Center and the British Council, with reference spaces being Warehouse 1 at Pier Mauá, MAR (Rio Art Museum), Museum of Tomorrow and Praça Mauá.
According to Shirley Villela, coordinator of Casa Mulheres da Maré and one of the organizers of the festival in Rio, at Southbank everything happens within the same structure, but here the experience will be absolutely different. Everything will happen simultaneously.
“You have to make choices about where you are going to be at that moment. There will be things happening at the Museum of Tomorrow, at the same time there will be things at MAR, the fair will be taking place in the square, Pier Mauá will be booming with young people and teenagers, with digital activism in the Youtube Space, among other events”, he reveals Shirley.
There will be four aspects of interaction at the event. Within the first type, dialogue panels, there will be discussion tables on specific topics with guests from all over the world and locals; story sharing, with two or three women telling their story in 15 minutes and encouraging other women in the audience to share their stories; and mentoring, with talking in pairs.
For entrepreneurship, a notice selected 150 women who will participate in the market in the square, exhibiting fashion, crafts and services. Activism, with social movements, will take place in the same space as the market.
Finally, the artistic and cultural part will have small performances in the middle of the square, such as theater, dance or circus, as well as a big show to end each day.
73 local, 48 national and 28 international guests have already been confirmed, from the most diverse fields of activity, such as literature, social activism, journalism, music and sport. The complete program has not yet been finalized and will be made available on the festival's website (www.festivalmulheresdomundo.com.br). Some activities will have advance registration available, in addition to password distribution on site.
