The Rio Art Museum (MAR) has transformed into a vibrant stage for Rio culture, opening its doors to the most anticipated exhibition of the year: “FUNK: a cry of boldness and freedom”. In this exciting celebration of Rio de Janeiro's cultural expression, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the universe of Rio funk, an artistic manifestation that transcends borders and empowers communities for decades.
To improve even further, this Saturday (30/09), entry to MAR will be free to celebrate the new exhibition, which promises to be a milestone in the city's cultural history, with an immersive experience that captures the pulsating essence of funk and its influence in Rio society.
Discovering the history of Funk Carioca
The exhibition “FUNK: Um Grito de Ousadia e Liberdade” delves deep into the history of this unique musical genre that emerged from the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors will be led on a chronological journey that begins at the roots of funk, exploring its beginnings at community parties.
With more than 900 works, MAR's main exhibition in 2023 recreates the history of Rio funk, going from the black dances of the 70s to the present day. There are photographs, paintings, objects, videos and installations by names such as Hebert, Vincent Rosenblatt, Blecaute, Maxwell Alexandre, Panmela Castro, Gê Viana, Daniela Dacorso, among many others.
The curation is by Marcelo Campos, chief curator of MAR, Amanda Bonan, curatorial manager of MAR, Dom Filó and Taísa Machado, with a team of consultants: Deize Tigrona, Sir Dema, Marcello B Groove, Tamiris Coutinho, Celly IDD, Glau Tavares, Sir Dema, GG Albuquerque, Leo Moraes and Zulu TR.
The cultural influence of Funk
The impact of funk is not just limited to music. The exhibition also highlights how this form of expression influenced fashion, dance, behavior and even politics. Visitors will be able to explore how funk has become a symbol of resistance and a powerful voice for marginalized communities.
And more…
The public will be able to interact with some installations, listen to music, dance and read texts that tell the story of musical rhythm in the two rooms of the exhibition pavilion. The expography is designed by Estúdio Gru.a.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to delve into the rich culture of Rio funk and understand how it shaped the identity of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition will be on display at the Rio Art Museum (MAR) until August 2024.
