MAR has free events to celebrate Black Consciousness Week 

The celebrations of the Black Consciousness Week at the Rio Art Museum (MAR). The royal entourage from the Ifé Palace, representing Your Imperial Majesty, is in Brazil to prepare the second visit of king Ooni of Ife in March 2022 it will be greeted with music, art and dance performances. The afoxé Filhos de Gandhi will make a procession that will leave from Cais do Valongo to the pilotis do MAR. From 3:30 pm onwards, they promise to rock the public with the afoxé rhythm that has cheered up the Rio Carnival since 1951.

 

The event presents the project “Treasures of Our Ancestors” which is an initiative of the Instituto Casa Herança de Oduduwa, to establish a connection between Brazil and the African continent, more precisely Nigeria. There will also be a pre-launch of the program Back To Home”, which is a path to reunite families that were dissolved due to the slave trade.

On Saturday, the program continues with the BaObazinhO project, by writer Juliana Correia, who arrives at the museum for free adaptations of tales from the oral tradition of different ethnic groups on the African continent. Children will have the opportunity to take a playful tour through memories and ancestral knowledge that are very present in Brazil. The activity is free and takes place at 2pm in the exhibition “YORÙBÁIANO”, by Ayrson Heráclito, in dialogue with the stories of the creation of the world from the orixás and their sacred foods.

Also on Saturday, the project “Tambor de Cumba – Afro-Brazilian dance circle” will hold a free performance on the museum's pilotis from 3:30 pm. There is also a conversation about the importance of promoting cultural traditions of African origin, so that black culture serves as a tool for empowerment and social integration through the arts.

On Sunday, from 2pm to 8pm, the Baile Black Bom Review takes place. Created in 2013, Baile Black Bom is a cultural occupation of urban space to promote black culture in Pedra do Sal, in the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro. The dance proposes a journey through the time of Black Music with reinterpretations of the genre's greatest classics, from 70s soul to contemporary hip hop performed by the band Consciência Tranquila. In the pickup trucks, DJ Flash commands the dance floor with the best of charm and Hip Hop for the Passinho crowd to dance to. The project attracts crowds every month, bringing free culture to the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The attraction on the MAR pilotis is subject to capacity and the maximum capacity is 500 people.
