After recently receiving the large sailing ships from friendly navies, from the 23rd to the 26th of February it is the turn of the century-old sailing ship “Statsraad Lehmkuhl”, from the One Ocean expedition, to be moored here at Pier Mauá. At 108 years old and 98 meters long, the vessel was renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art technology to collect data on the physics, chemistry and biology of the oceans throughout the journey.
The expedition schedule in Brazil includes political, cultural and scientific meetings and events. On February 24, the school ship will host the Green Technology for Sustainable Oceans seminar, held by the Norwegian Embassy in Brazil and the Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro with representatives of Norwegian and Brazilian companies and authorities .
The “Statsraad Lehmkuhl” serves as both a floating university and a training sailboat, bringing students, scientists, traveling crew and professionals together on different legs of the 20-month journey.
The One Ocean expedition is a trip around the planet organized by the Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation in partnership with the Norwegian government, universities, scientists and companies. The expedition left in August 2021 from Norway, where it will return in April 2023, after traveling around the world. By that date, it will have sailed 55 thousand nautical miles during all these months and visited 36 ports in different countries. Part of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2020-2030), launched by the United Nations (UN), the Norwegian expedition's main objective is to draw attention and share knowledge about the crucial role of the oceans for a sustainable future in a global perspective.
